- Summary
- Interview with producer/director Joseph Papp focusing on his work in Latin and Hispanic American theater. Papp discusses the Festival Latino in New York, which he began at the Public Theater in 1976 under the direction of Oscar Ciccone and Cecilia Vega; politics in relation to Latin American theater; Papp's longstanding connection with the Latino theatrical community in New York and his interest in developing works by Latino playwrights; theater's ability to express cultural nuances and its value in maintaining cultural integrity; his production of the plays The death of Garcia Lorca, directed by Carlos Giminez and Charles Gomez' Bang bang blues, about Gomez' experiences as a journalist in Latin America; how works are selected for the Festival Latino; the audience for his free Shakespeare plays in Central Park and the development of future audiences; his creative ideas for the Festival, including the use of culturally mixed personnel within productions and the inclusion of works in both English and Spanish. Papp also speaks of actor Raul Julia; Papp's choice to remain in non-profit theater rather than pursuing more lucrative projects; his experience growing up speaking Yiddish and his early interest in Shakespeare.
