Summary
Part of The Studies Project, an ongoing series of discussions, performances, and other presentations. Departing from the series' usual format, this discussion was opened to the audience after 20 min., following brief presentations by each of the three panelists. In addition to dancers, the audience included a number of dance critics, among them Joan Acocella, Sally Banes, Anita Finkel, Celia Ipiotis, Wendy Perron, Otis Stuart, and Burt Supree; identifications are uncertain because of the lack of house lighting and the camera's focus on the panel. During the lively and often heated discussion, the dancers express a general discontent with the present state of dance criticism, citing, for example, the lack of a broader context in most reviews, unease with the power wielded by critics in attracting audiences and portraying the performance for posterity, the lack of dialogue between dancers and critics, and the unedifying nature of some critical writing. The dance critics respond by describing their own point of view: the restrictions of time and space placed upon them by publications, the difficulty of meeting the needs of readers with different levels of knowledge and sophistication, the lack of feedback from readers. Also discussed are the notion of the dance review as a creative product in itself, the perceived superiority of criticism in other arts, and the function of criticism as an educational or marketing tool.
