- Summary
- The papers consist of incoming and outgoing personal correspondence, journals, notebooks, manuscripts, personal documents and photographic negatives. The bulk of Jan Gabrial's papers document her meeting of Lowry in Spain in 1933 and their marriage (1934-1940), particularly their life together in Paris and Mexico, as well as her travels in Europe, 1932-1934. Personal miscellany include her marriage and divorce papers, passport, and unidentified photographic negatives, apparently from her European tour. Gabrial's writings consist of fragments, three short stories, and an introduction to Lowry's In Ballast to the White Sea. The Malcolm Lowry series, comprising half of the collection, contains his incoming and outgoing correspondence, note fragments, three book jackets for his novel Ultramarine, and two undated typescripts of his manuscript, In Ballast to the White Sea, edited by Jan Gabrial.
