Summary
  1. Phil Donahue talks with his guests playwright Neil Simon, producer Joseph Papp and comedian Jackie Mason about their experiences in the theater. Donahue discusses the vitality of Broadway and the difficulty its performers face in finding work. Simon discusses the origin of the character Kate from his play Broadway bound and briefly discusses his approach to playwriting. Papp discusses Shakespeare's appeal to contemporary audiences; the financing of his free Shakespeare plays in Central Park; governmental subsidization of the theater; the importance of literacy in maintaining a theatergoing audience; and the ramifications of Broadway's high ticket prices. Mason discusses the success of his one-man show, The world according to me, and the growing interest in stand-up comedy in the United States. Program includes musical performances by cast members of the Broadway shows Cats, Les miserables, Starlight Express and A chorus line and a medley of show tunes performed by four Broadway hopefuls, as well as question and answer sessions with audience members.
