Summary
  1. Videocassette one: Two discussion sessions on Shakespeare's Hamlet conducted with New York City high school students. In the first, actor Kevin Kline discusses his views of and experiences playing Hamlet, currently at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater. Kline discusses Hamlet's moral character; Hamlet's passion and his revenge; the character of Ophelia; Hamlet's disillusionment; Shakespeare's genius; Hamlet's modesty and sense of virtue; revenge as virtuous; Hamlet's sanity; Hamlet's education; the variety of ways to play Hamlet and to interpret the play; Hamlet's philosophy; Shakespeare's use of language to express his viewpoints; the challenges the play presents to actors; and Kline's changing views of Hamlet after playing the role. Producer/director Joseph Papp adds his views, including the ambiguity of the play and the contradictions inherent in Hamlet; using Shakespeare's text to understand the play; and his view that Shakespeare wants audiences to like Hamlet.
  2. The second discussion, beginning at 50 min., is lead by Joseph Papp. Discussion includes the benefits of reading Hamlet, how Shakespearean roles have been performed historically; and understanding and interpreting Shakespearean texts, including discussion on Hamlet's soliloquy. The remainder of the tape contains interviews with students who discuss their experiences with Shakespeare and their reactions to Papp.
