Biography
  1. Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder, founders of the Playwrights Unit in 1963, along with Edward Albee, were a major force in producing plays by new, talented playwrights during the 1960s and helped to establish Off-Off Broadway as a viable theatrical venue. Their committment to emerging playwrights whose works were outside of the mainstream of Broadway productions allowed them to showcase the early works of playwrights like Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, Lanford Wilson, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Jean Claude Van Itallie, William Hanley, A.R. Gurney, Terence McNally, Jack Richardson, John Guare and Paul Zindel.
  2. Richard Barr was born Richard Baer in 1917 and grew up in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Princeton in 1938 and joined the Orson Welles-John Housman Mercury Theatre as an actor. He later became their executive assistant and had a bit part in the film CITIZEN KANE. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and then worked as a dialogue director in Hollywood and as a theater director in summer stock and in New York. During the late 1950's, he began producing shows on Broadway including HOTEL PARADISO, FALLEN ANGELS, and ALL IN ONE. He joined forces with Clinton Wilder in 1961 and continued to produce shows both on and off Broadway after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit and was replaced by Charles Woodward, Jr. Barr was president of the NY League of Theatres and died in 1989.
  3. Clinton Wilder was born in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1920. He also attended Princeton University (graduating in 1942) and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He began his professional career as a stage manager, then became a producer. His productions included THE TENDER TRAP, SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR, VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET and REGINA, which he co-produced with Cheryl Crawford. Wilder worked with Barr from 1961-1968 when he left the Playwrights Unit. He was the founder and director of the Theatre Development Fund (1968-1974) and served on its board until his death in 1986.
