Summary
Inside/out is a series of outdoor programs in which artists perform and discuss their choreography with audiences in an informal setting. This program begins with Maria Cheng rehearsing a solo work in progress. Cheng speaks about her background and how she began dancing. She performs First dance, set to music by Francisco Tarrega, and discusses the influences that led her to create it. Next Cheng discusses and performs Seasonal images of a courtesan, set to Japanese folk music. Both of these solos were included in Cheng's work Antecedents. Three movements from Cheng's work Fertile landscapes (based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kublai Khan) are performed by students in the Horton Workshop, who are introduced by Cheng. At the end of the program, Cheng and Michael Engel rehearse excerpts from a work in progress set to a Beethoven piano concerto; the piece is a projected quartet with the working title Two is not enough (possibly an early version of Two for the road).
