Summary

Inside/out is a series of programs presented outdoors at Jacob's Pillow, in which dancers perform or rehearse works and discuss them with the audience. The first program on this tape (presented indoors), begins with Don Zuckerman performing Who's on first. Lerman and Zuckerman perform a duet version of Lerman's piece Journey, set to text from Peter Handke's play Self accusation. Journey is usually performed as a solo. Lerman discusses the gestural language she uses in the piece and its relation to traditional sign language. Lerman discusses the work in progress Atomic priests, developed with Jacob's Pillow students, which focusses on the issue of toxic waste dumps. The students demonstrate how the piece developed through improvisation. Finally, the students perform another work by Lerman, inspired by the experience of visiting her father-in-law during his operation for a brain tumor.
In the second Inside/out program, presented outdoors, Lerman discusses her ideas about the importance of dance as an integral part of communities. Lerman and Don Zuckerman perform a duet version of her solo Journey. Lerman discusses her work with seniors in Washington DC, and her current work with seniors from Lee, Mass. The seniors from Lee demonstrate warmup exercises and improvisations directed by Lerman, and then perform a short piece set to music from Swan lake, and another piece, developed through student improvisation, about the Berkshire mountains. The tape ends abruptly.
