Summary
The first segment on this tape records a presentation on the Jacob's Pillow outdoor stage by Benjamin Harkarvy and students in the ballet project. Harkarvy speaks from the stage about the ballet project: who the students are, their goals, their training, the purpose of ballet technique, and the difficulty of the dance profession. Students demonstrate classroom exercises, including barre work, partnering, pointe work and choreography. Harkarvy discusses the Elements of performing workshop and students demonstrate exercises from the workshop. These exercises, created by Harkarvy, develop walking styles, corps dancing, and acting skills. Excerpts from Harkarvy's ballet Madrigalesco are included. Male and female students perform separate etudes, and the students perform a brief narrative ballet set in a Spanish village. The last ten minutes of the tape record the men's etude and the Spanish dance performed on stage in the Ted Shawn Theatre.
