  1. Profile of theater impresario Joseph Papp aired Channel 13, WNET-TV. Includes the history of the New York Shakespeare Festival and its free Shakespeare performances in Central Park; discussion of Papp's role as a producer, and brief interviews with actors and other New York Shakespeare Festival personnel who discuss their views of Papp. Papp discusses using New York City's parks as a child, the development of his ear for Shakespearean language, and more on his childhood, and his Jewish identity. Remaining discussion includes Papp's views of the musical A chorus line, his creation of the Public Theater in 1967; Papp's willingness to take professional risks to produce plays with political messages such as The normal heart by Larry Kramer, one of the first plays to address the AIDS epidemic; Papp's role in launching the careers of many well-known actors and playwrights; his unsuccessful fight to save two Broadway theaters from destruction; his educational program for schoolchildren; and Papp as a theatrical showman. The program includes footage of Papp leading a Passover seder, rehearsals of the The normal heart and Papp singing Accentuate the positive.
