Summary
  • Inside/out is a series of programs presented outdoors, in which performers rehearse and discuss their works, often including works in progress, with audiences. In the first program, Blondell Cummings, artist in residence at Jacob's Pillow in 1984, discusses her work and performs excerpts from finished works and one work in progress. Cummings talks about her use of gesture and sign language, improvisation and visual imagery. She performs He's got the whole world in his hands, an excerpt from The ladies and me, which incorporates sign language. Cummings discusses the influence of photography on her work and performs an example of a type of work she called Motion pictures. Cummings then demonstrates improvisation, first to her own improvised text about getting a haircut, and then in response to words supplied by the audience. Cummings then discusses and performs several excerpts from her work Chicken soup. Lastly, Cummings presents an excerpt from a work in progress that became The art of war/Nine situations. The improvisational excerpt, performed by Cummings and another dancer, is repeated several times, and Cummings discusses it with the audience. In the second Inside/out program (Aug. 18), Cummings continues to present excerpts from The art of war and discuss the work with the audience.
  • In the third Inside/out program (Aug. 22), students in the Jazz Workshop perform Caryatids, a study for the work by Mark Morris that became The death of Socrates. In the same program, Marta Renzi and Dancers rehearse excerpts from an untitled work in progress and Between the lines, both choreographed by Renzi. Renzi discusses the relationship between words, music and dance in Between the lines, and answers questions from the audience about the work. In the last program (Aug. 23), Jazz Workshop students perform an untitled work by Charles Wright.
