- Producer/director Joseph Papp and New York Parks Commissioner Gordon Davis discuss Central Park with host Ponchitta Pierce. Papp speaks of spending time in the city's parks as a child; the parks as a haven for the poor and the parks' current condition; his conflict with former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses over charging admission to plays in Central Park; the building of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park; a similar struggle with Mayor Ed Koch over charging admission to plays; the elimination of city funding for New York Shakespeare Festival performances in Central Park, now self-supported with proceeds from its commercially successful shows; and the offerings at the Delacorte Theater this summer. Davis discusses his 10-year plan to rebuild Central Park funded largely by private sources and his various other planned projects; attending New York Shakespeare Festival plays at the Delacorte and his admiration for Papp.
