  1. Segment one: The musical, aired WNET-TV, Channel 13, in August 1980. Program begins at 40 min. Documentary on the history and origins of the American musical featuring interview excerpts with producer/director Joseph Papp. Papp discusses how he came to produce the musical Hair at the Public Theater; Hair's revolutionizing effect on the musical form and its expression of contemporary attitudes; his decision to produce contemporary plays as well plays by Shakespeare at the Public Theater; his early exposure to sheet music; Broadway as a province of the middle class and its inaccessibility to him as a poor youth. Program includes performance excerpts of the New York Shakespeare Festival production Leaf people.

Hosts Phyllis Haynes and Mary Helen McPhillips interview Papp about the New York Shakespeare Festival's current summer programs. Papp discusses the Elizabeth Swados' musical Under fire, performed at various parks throughout the city via the New York Shakespeare Festival's mobile theater; the construction and operation of the mobile theater; the response to the mobile theater by its local audiences; the social and artistic objectives for mobile theater performances; Papp's production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, including changes he made in its casting and music in comparison with previous productions; his views on the operetta; Linda Ronstadt's decision to play the part of Mabel and how she prepared for her part; the casting mix of British and American actors; the critical appraisal of the show.
