Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (46 min.): sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  • June 28, 1983. The tape begins with a performance of a seven-minute excerpt from Requiem, a solo danced by Richard Cragun. The performance is followed by a presentation by Liz Thompson, director of Jacob's Pillow, and Kitty Dukakis, wife of Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis, on the occasion of the renaming of Studio 2 at Jacob's Pillow as the Walter Terry studio. Thompson discusses Terry, who died in the previous year, and his connection to Jacob's Pillow. Kitty Dukakis reads a proclamation from Governor Dukakis. Thompson discusses the upcoming 51st season at Jacob's Pillow, thanks her staff and introduces the Paul Taylor Dance Company. This presentation lasts approximately seven minutes.
  • July 13, 1983. This segment records the first program in a series called Friends and artists, featuring Ann Reinking and Clive Barnes. The program is introduced by Kit Dobelle, of Friends of Jacob's Pillow, and Liz Thompson, director of Jacob's Pillow. Reinking and Barnes ask each other questions and then answer questions from the audience. Reinking describes how she became interested in dance and how she became involved in musical theater; Barnes discusses his early love for theater and how he decided to become a critic. Reinking and Barnes both comment on the importance of having a broad, eclectic view of dance, and the place of dramatic expression and individuality in dance. Barnes discusses his introduction of the term "plotless," rather than "abstract," to describe ballets; his dance training and choreographic experience; his decision to leave the New York Times. Reinking describes how her training changed when she went into musical theater; the importance of ballet training in the musical theater, especially for men; her love for performing. Barnes discusses the influence of television, superstars, and increased press coverage on the growth of dance in America, and why New York City has the largest number of dance companies in America.
