Summary
  • Side A, part 1 (ca. 28 min.). [Begins abruptly.] Bella Lewitzky speaks about the communal lifestyle of Lester Horton and his students due to their lack of money; his method of teaching technique; working with Horton as he created dances on her; Horton's interest in Oscar Wilde's play Salomé; his incorporation of elements of Native American culture in his work; his use of percussion instruments from around the world; the influence of Lewitzky's political and social philosophy on her working methods; her relationship with her dancers; the work of Susan Rose, a former student; her thoughts on the word utopian, as related to dance and in general. [Interview is concluded; following a short gap, part 2 of the interview begins. As stated above, part 2 is in fact the first half of the interview.]
  • Side A, part 2 (ca. 27 min.). Lewitzky speaks about Llano del Rio [the utopian socialist community in Calif. where she was born]; her parents, in particular their political beliefs and activities and reasons for moving to Llano del Rio; their personalities and concerns; their support of her dancing; her background with respect to religion, including her first and subsequent experiences of anti-Semitism.
