- Disc 1 (ca. 48 min.) [The first 3 min. contains extraneous noise and experiments with a tape recorder] Most of the interview focusses on Robbins' Broadway career, in light of the show Jerome Robbins' Broadway, which opened in New York Feb. 26, 1989. Robbins discusses his absence from Broadway since Fiddler on the roof, and changes in musical theater over the past 25 years; the origins of Jerome Robbins' Broadway in an archival project to reconstruct dance numbers from his past shows; the influences of George Abbott and George Balanchine on his work; Abbott's assistance during the creation of On the town; differences between Balanchine's dance background and his own; the contribution of Agnes DeMille to Broadway choreography; Robbins' desire to bridge the gap between classical art and commercial theater in West Side story; his contribution to Fiddler on the roof, and what drew him to the show; his interest in the survival of his work, and the disadvantages of videotape as a means of preservation; his need for control over the casting of his ballets, and his support for choreographers' rights; interplay between his Broadway shows and his ballets; his feelings about working on a new Broadway show; the current state of New York City Ballet; thoughts on future work he might do; the relation of ballet to theater; his feelings on turning 70; his opinion of the cast of Jerome Robbins' Broadway, and differences between numbers in the show and the original versions.
