  1. This is a synthetic collection, created from materials acquired through gift and purchase from various sources. The bulk of the materials was formerly owned by W. T. H. Howe, the literary agency A. P. Watt & son, and Henry W. and Albert A. Berg. Other materials were previously owned by Oliver R. Barrett, Frederick Douglass Underwood, "The Lighthouse" contains a manuscript note: "This was given by Wilkie Collins to Emile Forgues his French translator, Leon Forgues gave it to me in 1866. [signed] H.L.E."; and inscribed on verso of p. 98 of an incomplete holograph of "Iris": "This manuscript came from the library of my father, Eugene Field. Nov. 9, 1931. Eugene Field II."
