Its noble participants were divided into five quadrilles named after national groups selected for their prestige or exoticism: Romans (led by the king himself), Persians, Turks, Indians, and Native Americans. The riders and horses in each group were elaborately costumed, and the festivities, often accompanied by music, allowed them to show off their horsemanship in processions, pageants, and games of skill.
