Summary

[Begins abruptly; sound quality fair; contains extraneous noise, including barking dogs.] In an interview concerning the television program, An evening of Jerome Robbins' ballets, Robbins discusses modifying his ballets for television; his ballet The concert (1956) and his decision to create a comic ballet, staging it for the Ed Sullivan show and the influence of Saul Steinberg's drawings. Robbins discusses his choreographic process; his lack of favorites among his ballets; the effect of a new cast on an existing ballet; the existence of ballet only while it is being performed; his ballet Fancy free (1944) as staged by Ballet Theatre in comparison with his recent revival for the New York City Ballet; joining the New York City Ballet in 1949 and leaving in 1956; forming Ballets: U.S.A. for the Spoleto Festival [interruption]; his previous work for public television; fame and being visually recognized by others; his daily routines; his enjoyment of the beach; riding a bicycle to work at Lincoln Center; the risk of doing a program for network television and his hopes for its outcome; parting comments [remaining 2 min. of disc consists of overhead airplane noise, Robbins' request to a household employee and room noise].

• On July 2, 1980, WNBC-TV telecast the second program in its series, Live from studio 8H, entitled An evening of Jerome Robbins' ballets. The program was produced by Alvin Cooperman and Judith De Paul. It featured five of Robbins' ballets performed by members of the New York City Ballet.
