[Disc begins abruptly.] Jerome Robbins discusses working to get his ballet The Goldberg variations (1971) ready for its workshop opening in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; his creative process and the audience reaction to his work; the ways in which an audience may relate to dance; working with dancers Patricia McBride and Edward Villella; the personal relationships between performers and its effect on their work onstage; the dancer's life; ballet's goal of the appearance of effortlessness on stage [break]; the high cost of tickets for the performing arts in the U.S. [break]; the perception of American ballet in Europe in contrast to its perception at home; economic deterrents to pursuing a dance career [break]; Robbins discusses the appeal of choreography to the audience, including the interaction between music and space [ends abruptly].
