- Summary
- Documentary on the life and work of pioneering modern dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham. Cunningham himself, along with his dancers, collaborators, and observers, traces the course of his long career and that of his dance company. Topics include: his special qualities as a dancer; his performances as a member of Martha Graham's company; his choreographic approach and sources of inspiration; his longtime association and collaboration with composer John Cage; his residency at Black Mountain College; the development of his use of chance procedures; the early years of his company; his preference for avant-garde music, and his collaborations with various composers; and his use of technological innovations such as the computer program Life forms. The program is copiously illustrated with excerpts from his works; among those discussed in interviews are Pond way, Beach birds for camera, Totem ancestor, Antic meet, Septet, Story, Winterbranch, Biped, and Occasion piece.
