  1. The position of Medical Officer at the New York Public Library was created by the Board of Trustees in 1911. John Shaw Billings, Jr. (son of the Director of the Library) was appointed to the post and served until 1917. He conducted medical exams of the staff and inspected buildings for sanitary conditions.
