Summary
Teachers give lessons in the Japanese tea ceremony to members of the American Theater Laboratory. The tape begins with students practicing folding napkins, bowing, walking, cleaning utensils and making tea. Off-camera, Jerome Robbins talks with one of the teachers about contemporary American culture, Noh plays and Western drama. Then the teachers perform a complete tea ceremony with narration describing the actions and utensils. For the beginning of this session, see *MGZIA 4-6264.

  • American Theatre Laboratory was created in 1966 by Jerome Robbins, with a $300,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The experimental theater workshop rehearsed several projects and created many exercises, but did not produce any shows. Some of its work was influenced by Japanese Noh drama. American Theatre Laboratory disbanded in 1968.
