Summary

1. After a rehearsal of excerpts from Variations on I'm old fashioned, Jerome Robbins discusses the progress of the work with composer Morton Gould and pianist Richard Moredock. They discuss problems with the opening, the ordering of the variations and the music. After Robbins and Moredock leave the studio, Morton Gould is interviewed alone, probably by Joel Gold. He talks about the challenge of capturing the quality of Astaire in the ballet; the importance of being self-critical during the creative process; what it is like to work with Robbins. 1. Variations on I'm old fashioned is a ballet tribute to Fred Astaire, with music by Morton Gould, based on Jerome Kern's song I'm old fashioned, from the motion picture You were never lovelier (Columbia, 1942). The ballet premiered on June 16, 1983.
2. This tape is one of 36 made between Sept. and Nov. 1982 for a projected documentary on the making of I'm old fashioned. DeWitt Sage, Joel Gold and John Goberman were involved in the project, which was never produced.
