Summary
Two teachers give lessons in the Japanese tea ceremony to members of the American Theater Laboratory. The methods of preparing, pouring and drinking tea, folding napkins, and bowing are shown. Jerome Robbins and other participants discuss the meaning and history of the tea ceremony with one of the teachers. The teacher relates several Japanese stories to illustrate points, and Robbins and the teacher discuss the role of the tea ceremony in Japanese society; the differences between Japanese and American attitudes towards nature and beauty; and conflicts within Japanese culture between traditional and contemporary ways of life. The lesson takes place in the American Theatre Laboratory's studios.
