Description
1 videocassette (NTSC) (88 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Home movies of a visit to Turkey made by Rudolf Nureyev and his friends in April-May 1986. Includes extensive footage of sightseeing trips, particularly in Istanbul, where Nureyev staged his production of The sleeping beauty for the Turkish National Ballet on May 4, 1986. At ca. 14 min. into the tape, Nureyev and Patricia Ruanne are seen rehearsing the corps de ballet in the Act III polonaise; at 20 min., Nureyev works without music with a male dancer, possibly rehearsing the male variation of the Act III jewels pas de cinq. Beginning at ca. 49 min. there are about 31 min. of footage of a dress rehearsal on stage of the Act III wedding scene of The sleeping beauty. Included in this footage are the polonaise danced by the corps de ballet, the jewels pas de cinq, part of the male variation from the bluebird pas de deux, the grand pas de deux, and the final mazurka. Some sections are repeated, and some of the choreography is marked rather than danced full-out. Nureyev wears the top of his costume with rehearsal tights. The sightseeing segments of the tape show Nureyev shopping at various locations for kilims, which he collected; visiting a fish market; going on a boat trip; viewing the Hagia Sophia and other places of interest. Many of these segments were recorded from a moving car.
