Discussion of Mark Morris's modern dance work Gong (to be presented by the Royal Ballet on October 22, 2002), with emphasis on its cross-cultural qualities, derived in part from its score, Colin McPhee's Tabuh-tabuhan, a tribute to Balinese gamelan music. The article also examines the similarities between ballet and Balinese dance movements, and Morris's openness to Asian music and dance.
