Telecast of the Vienna Philharmonic's annual New Year's concert ; includes musical works principally by Johann Strauss, Jr., and two pre-recorded dance segments. This recording begins in the middle of a ballet depicting various characters from the Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights), set to waltzes by Johann Strauss. Rudolf Nureyev appears at ca. 3 min. into the tape, dancing in the love duet of the Caliph of Baghdad and Scheherazade. The second dance number, performed to Strauss's Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, Op. 214, begins at ca. 11 min. into the tape. Set at the Café Wien in the 1920s, it depicts a high-spirited romp by waiters, billiard-players, flappers, and others.
