Summary

1. Excerpts from two dance classes taught by Eusebio Lobo da Silva, a Brazilian dancer and capoeira artist who studied and performed at Katherine Dunham's Performing Arts Training Center at Southern Illinois University, East St. Louis, in 1979. The classes, taught in a gymnasium, are accompanied by drumming ; the students include adult men and women, and one little girl. In the first class da Silva, dressed in a striped unitard, leads the class in standing exercises in the center ; the class then forms a circle and its members take turns dancing alone or with da Silva. In the second class da Silva, in brown tights, begins with warm-up exercises sitting or lying on the floor, and continues on to floor progressions and standing exercises, including many capoeira kicks, somersaults, and cartwheels. The class again forms a circle, this time taking turns practicing capoeira moves with da Silva.
