Three traditional Maori dances, shown from various angles and distances, alternating with each other. The poi dance, performed by women, involves the twirling of plant-fiber balls in intricate patterns. Two versions of the poi dance are shown here, the long poi and the short poi, named after the length of the cords on which the balls are fastened. Haka, performed by men, was originally a preparation for war. A fourth dance or game, involving confrontations between two dancers, is also shown at the end of cassette 1.
Originally filmed on 16mm ; film preserved and transferred to videotape by the Dance Division, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, in 2001.
