Summary
Second video in a set of two videos and a book exploring the aesthetics and dance technique of modern dancer-choreographer Erick Hawkins (1909-1994). The words and example of Hawkins himself, seen in archival footage, help explain the principles underlying his choreography and teaching. This tape contains standing and traveling exercises in center, floor progressions, and jumps from a class in Hawkins technique, illustrated by a class taught by Hawkins in 1985, intercut with a class taught by former company member Cynthia Reynolds in 1997. Also included is a discussion of Hawkins's creation of stage works: his utilization of all theatrical elements (music, scenery, costumes, masks, props, lighting) ; his commissions of new musical scores, and his longtime collaboration with composer Lucia Dlugoszewski ; his belief in the power of poetry and metaphor.
