Summary
  1. In interviews interspersed with performance, class, and rehearsal footage, Talley Beatty, recipient of the 1993 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement in Choreography, looks back at his life and career. He describes his first choreography in the film A study in choreography for camera (1945), directed by Maya Deren ; his experiences as a member of the Katherine Dunham Company ; dancing in the musical Cabin in the sky, which was choreographed by George Balanchine ; creating dance for television ; his partnership with Janet Collins ; running his own company ; staging his choreography for the students of Elma Lewis in Boston ; encountering and surmounting racial prejudice in the course of his career. He discusses the historical basis of two of his works, Road of the Phoebe Snow (1959) and Mourner's bench, part of Southern landscape (1947), and talks about the mix of dance forms in his recent restaging of Celebration (ca. 1973). He analyzes his own movement style, which he considers Graham-influenced rather than a type of jazz dance.
