Description
  1. 1 videocassette (39 min.) : sd., col. PAL; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
  1. Choreographer Richard Alston discusses his solo dance work Soda lake (1981). He begins by describing Nigel Hall's sculpture of the same title (1968), which appears as an element of the piece, and its genesis in Hall's visit to the actual Soda Lake, a dry lake in the Mojave Desert of Nevada. Alston describes the qualities that drew him to the sculpture and inspired him to make a piece around it. After a performance of the solo by Mark Baldwin, Alston analyzes the choreographic structure of the work ; its use of space, shape, weight, and dynamics ; its dual nature as an abstraction and a work redolent with evocative images ; and the relation of the choreography, the sculpture, and the associations of the landscape that inspired the sculpture. The program closes with a second performance of the solo, this time by Amanda Britton.
