Summary
  1. Documentary on Rudolf Nureyev in the last decade of his life, as remembered by those who knew him in professional and private life. Topics include his appointment in 1983 as artistic director of the Paris Opéra Ballet and his transformation of the company ; his return to Russia in 1987 for the first time since his defection ; his discovery of his illness with AIDS, and his struggles to continue his artistic activities ; his venture into musical theater in The king and I ; his performances of La sylphide with his home company, the Kirov Ballet, in 1989 ; his departure from the Paris Opéra Ballet, and his subsequent return, at the company's invitation, to stage La bayadère in 1992. The speakers emphasize his special qualities as a dancer and an individual, his passion for dancing, and the determination that fueled his struggles against insurmountable odds. The program contains numerous brief excerpts of Nureyev and others in rehearsal and performance.
