- Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1854, Jennie Jerome was taken to Europe as an adolescent by her socially ambitious mother. In 1874 she married Lord Randolph Churchill, son of the Duke of Marlborough. After his early death in 1895 Lady Churchill became a journalist, editor, memoirist and playwright. She married twice more before her death in 1921 at the age of 67. Her elder son was Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), English statesman. Mary Forbes was a stage, screen, and television actress, and mother of actors Ralph Forbes (1896-1951) and Brenda Forbes (1909-1996).

Bound volume, designed to commemorate the Shakespeare Memorial National Theatre Ball held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, June 20, 1911. The book was edited by Mrs. George Cornwallis-West, also known as Lady Randolph Spencer Churchill, and features brief essays written by George Bernard Shaw, G. K. Chesterton, C. Lewis Hind, Anthony Hope, I. Gollancz, and others. Illustrations feature society notables dressed as characters from the plays of William Shakespeare. This copy was originally presented to actress Mary Forbes, and tucked inside are two photographs of Mary Forbes' son, actor Ralph Forbes, probably taken in the 1930s.
