  • Disc no. 20 (ca. 47 min.). Moore, moderator, introduces Kriegsman, Lewis, Allen, Phillips, Obara Wali Rahman, and Rodgers and the symposium topic: the different angles and aspects of dance criticism and programming. Kriegsman speaks briefly (ca. 3 min.) about presenting jazz tap dancing in the United States and maintaining its continuity as a living art; Lewis speaks briefly (ca. 4 min.) about the role she hopes her dance criticism plays in informing the general public about current work of Black dancers and choreographers and in documenting their work for posterity; Allen (ca. 4 min.) speaks briefly about her approach to dance criticism, including her goal of reaching all audiences, from the general public to the dancers themselves; Phillips (ca. 2 min.) speaks very briefly about difficulties in presenting Black dance programs; Obara Wali Rahman speaks briefly (ca. 4 min.) about presenting African dance in America and the importance of the African heritage.

Rodgers speaks briefly (ca. 7 min.) in general terms about prejudice, racism, and various cultural and critical outlooks; in opening the floor to questions, Moore speaks briefly (3 min.) about his concern with educating the public about Afro-American dance; question and answer session, including discussion of the economics of dance criticism and presenting of dance programs, a statement from audience member, Sally Sommer, on dance criticism; dissemination of information about the Dance Black America festival; Rodgers' statement regarding his dissatisfaction with the description of his work in the souvenir booklet (ca. 23 min. total; audibility of questions often poor). Sound quality: The cassettes from which the Dance Black America festival were preserved contain gaps, abrupt starts and stops, unrelated material, and material that is out of sequence. In addition, the audibility, especially of questions taken from the audience, is often poor.
