  • Symposium: Caribbean and Latin American Influences in American Dance: Marta Vega, and Lavinia Williams. 4/22/83. (Ca. 54 min. total: ca. 45 min. on disc no. 9 and ca. nine min. on disc no. 10). Introductory remarks (ca. 5 min.) of Donald O'Dowd, then Vice Chancellor of the State University of New York; introductory remarks of Vega, moderator; audio portion (ca. 4 min.) of film clip of African-influenced Cuban dance; Williams (ca. 16 min.) speaks about the history of Black dance in America and influences from Haiti and elsewhere in the Caribbean, frequently using physical demonstrations of movements and steps; question and answer session [ca. 9 min. of question and answer session continues on disc no. 10; questions inaudible].
  • Filmed Interview with Katherine Dunham (filmed March 1983). Shown 4/22/83. [Ca. 23 min. total; begins on disc no. 10 following ca. 9 min. of continuation of question and answer session relating to Vega and Williams symposium.] Introductory remarks; screening of film of Dunham in Haiti speaking about Black dance; the film, which includes music and dancing accompanied by Dunham's commentary, was created by film makers Don Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus in March 1983 for the purpose of the Dance Black America Festival due to Dunham's inability to travel. [Ca. 5 min. gap between end of recording of Dunham film and beginning of recording of symposium on Dunham.]
  • Symposium: The Contributions and Legacy of Katherine Dunham: Veve Clark, Charles Moore, Pearl Reynolds, Glory Van Scott, Jeanelle Stovall, and Lavinia Williams. 4/22/83. [Ca. 81 min. total: begins on disc no. 10 ca. 36 min. into the recording; continues on discs nos. 11 and 12.] Introductory remarks of moderator Clark and introduction of panelists, including Talley Beatty and Carmencita Romero (who are not named as panelists in the souvenir booklet) who speak in turn about Dunham and the Dunham technique and Dunham's dances mainly from a personal perspective; begins with Beatty. [Disc no. 10 ends abruptly in middle of Beatty's remarks, which continue on Disc no. 11.] The second part of Beatty's remarks is followed by those of the other speakers: Williams, Moore, Romero, Reynolds, Van Scott, and Stovall. [Disc no.11 ends abruptly in middle of Stovall's remarks, which continue on disc no. 12.] The second part of Stovall's remarks is followed by those of Veve Clark; question and answer session [questions inaudible].

Sound quality: Sound quality is poor at times. Content in part is difficult to understand due to use of physical demonstrations by the speaker Lavinia Williams to illustrate her lecture. The questions in the question and answer session are inaudible. The cassettes from which the Dance Black America festival were preserved contain gaps, abrupt starts and stops, unrelated material, and material that is out of sequence.
