  1. Ms. Sullivan discusses her first dance experiences in class, growing up in a boarding house in Harlem and being taught by performers who stayed there; learning the lindy hop from musicals; learning dances from her mother; shake dancers; stories about her life in New York at this time; entering dance contests and going to the Savoy Ballroom to dance; the music that was popular at uptown clubs during the 1940s and 1950s as well as some of the dance styles such as ballroom. She describes particular steps from the lindy hop. Interview stops and resumes on 3/21/01. Sullivan and Sommer spell names that have been discussed in the interview; Sullivan recounts stories about her life at this time, including how she managed her children while dancing; her first experiences going to the Savoy ballroom; her ideas on what makes a great lindy hopper; partnering; her own style and technique for certain steps; her response to her own success; teaching others the lindy.
