Sheldon Schwartz (ca. 10 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: his studies at The Juilliard School with Alfredo Corvino ; dancing with the Basel Ballet ; his administrative positions with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Kennedy Center, and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company ; his current studies for a master's degree in social work ; dance as a means of communication.
Douglas Dunn (ca. 9 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: the special appeal of the nonverbal qualities of dance ; his current work with playwright Jim Neu, and experimentation in the verbal world ; the different time sense inherent in dance ; his observations of fellow participants in From the horse's mouth and his enjoyment of the different dance styles they represented.
Sridar.S (ca. 12 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: how he started to dance ; the stigma against male dancing in his native India, which led him to break with tradition ; his blending of martial arts and yoga with dance, and his collaboration with Chandralekha, who has similar aims ; his belief in the benefits of breaking down barriers, bringing dancers of different types together, and learning from one another, which he experienced while participating in From the horse's mouth.
Joanne Robinson-Hill (ca. 12 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: her dance studies, beginning in childhood and continuing at Bennington College ; her interest in teaching, and role in developing the dance program at Lincoln Center Institute ; her current work in creating educational programs at the Joyce Theater ; how the experience of participating in From the horse's mouth reinforced her belief in dance as a basic human activity, open to all regardless of gender or age.
Mary Anthony (ca. 15 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: how she began dancing ; her early exposure to Martha Graham's works ; Isadora Duncan's groundbreaking contributions to modern dance ; Anthony's arrival in New York and audition at Hanya Holm's studio ; Louise Kloepper's classes at the Holm studio ; dealing with stage fright ; the importance of music in her choreography, and her admiration for Benjamin Britten's music ; her experiences in teaching movement to actors ; sources of components of her modern dance classes (including elements from Kirov Ballet training) ; Mikhail Baryshnikov's evolution into a "total dancer," combining modern dance and ballet.
Marcia Lerner (ca. 16 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: her decision at age 11 to become a dancer ; her work with Dance Theater Workshop and the Martha Graham Dance Company ; the revival of Graham's Primitive mysteries ; her friendship and artistic collaboration with Art Bauman ; her current work as a therapist, and how she draws upon her sensitivity to nonverbal communication.
Brenda Bufalino (ca. 22 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Topics include: her roots in a musical and theatrical family, with which she performed at an early age ; studying rhythm tap with Stanley Brown ; the demise of tap and its revival in 1973, when she began to work with Honi Coles and the Copasetics ; her production of the documentary Great feats of feet ; the constant renewal of tap as a dance form ; the difficulty of gaining respect for tap as a high art form ; Savion Glover's melding of tap and hip hop.
Caren Calder Plummer (ca. 11 min.) / interviewed by Tina Croll. Topics include: beginning her dance career in college ; dancing with Garth Fagan ; her dance activities in upstate New York ; her work in New York City with Chuck Davis and Forces of Nature ; her move towards African dance in her current work, which includes teaching and storytelling ; her experiences with the Dancemobile project.
