- Summary
- Speaking before an audience, actress Lillian Gish lectures on the history of American silent film from the 1890s to the dawn of talking pictures in the late 1920s, with emphasis on her work with director D.W. Griffith. In addition to excerpts from their collaborations such as The birth of a nation (1915) and Way down East (1920), scenes are included from the films of Mack Sennett, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, and Lillian's sister Dorothy Gish. Early films from France and Italy are also excerpted and discussed.
