Summary
  1. This collection, predominately clippings and programs, documents the history of theaters, performance and popular entertainment in Washington D.C. from 1800-1919 and is a resource for information about 19th and early 20th century actors, actresses, singers and vaudeville performers. Motion picture reviews begin to appear around 1913 and circus performances appear throughout. Other materials in the collection include correspondence of Mudd on theatrical topics from the early 20th century and writings by Mudd on Washington D.C. theater history, an autobiographical article about his time at the Associated Press, and other topics.

Biography (note)
  1. Aloysius I. Mudd was an expert on Washington D.C. theater history. He compiled records of every theatrical and operatic performance in Washington D.C. from June 1800 through the early 1900s, put together a history of Ford's Theatre, and completed THE HISTORY OF POLITE VAUDEVILLE. He also wrote two papers for the Columbia Historical Society on early theaters in Washington from 1800-1850. Mudd was the day manager of the Washington office of the Associated Press until 1892 and was connected with the United Press and the Southern Associated Press until 1897. He then worked as chief clerk of the Department of Agriculture's Division of Publications.
