- Summary
- The Robert Van Lierop Photograph Collection depicts some aspects of his career as a film producer, political activist and foreign diplomat, from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. The collection consists of some candid portraits of Van Lierop; individual and group portraits and candid shots of heads of state, diplomats, political activists and musicians; views of diplomatic and ceremonial gatherings; a political march and rally; street scenes; and some views of African refugees. The collection lacks views of Van Lierop's personal life, his career as an attorney, or his United Nations activities. The collection includes a candid portrait of Van Lierop, with an unidentified woman, probably during his television assignment in Mozambique (1977); and television and publicity stills from a 1977 broadcast of the WABC (New York) television news program "Like It Is," reporting on the United Nations Conference in Support of the Peoples of Zimbabwe and Namibia, in Maputo, Mozambique. Stills depict United States Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young and President Samora Machel of Mozambique addressing the Conference; a view of Ambassador Young being interviewed by Van Lierop, who also co-produced the program; and views of Zimbabwean children in refugee camps in Mozambique. Also depicted in the collection is the South Pacific Forum for Pacific heads-of-state, held in Suva, Fiji (1986), which includes individual and group portraits and views from diplomatic sessions, receptions and ceremonial gatherings. Van Lierop attended the Forum as a member of the delegation from the Republic of Vanuatu. The collection also includes views, mainly on contact sheets, of a march and various rallies sponsored by the Pan-African Solidarity Committee in New York City, which also depict Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., attending a rally, and views of residents and shop owners along the march route (1970). Other depictions of individuals or groups in the collection include candid portraits of Senegalese filmmaker and writer Ousmane Sembène and Zimbabwean nationalist leader Joshua Nkomo (n.d.); a contact sheet with portraits of nurse and civil rights activist Mabel Keaton Staupers (ca. 1970); and publicity photographs of various musical groups, such as Air, Chic, Nova, David Sancious & Tone and War (ca. 1970s).
