Summary
Documentary on Rudolf Nureyev's staging of Raymonda for the Royal Ballet touring section as part of the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto. The extensive rehearsal footage reveals the commitment, hard work and attention to detail that he brought to choreography as well as his own performances. In interviews interspersed throughout the program, he specifies which parts of the choreography are his and which are Petipa's ; emphasizes the importance of work ; describes the clarity of his concepts and his desire to create rapport with the audience ; notes the primacy of the classical technique ; and names some exceptional dancers. The substantial excerpts from the ballet, danced in rehearsal with Margot Fonteyn as Raymonda, include the Act II duel of Jean de Brienne and Abderachman, and the ensuing pas d'action of Jean and Raymonda ; the Act III adagio of Jean, Raymonda and the classical ensemble ; and the dream duet of Jean and Raymonda. Performance excerpts, with Doreen Wells as Raymonda, include Jean's variations ; and the finale of Act III, with Raymonda, Jean, and the classical and character ensembles.
