Description
1 videocassette (83 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Part of Rêves d'étoiles, les grands ballets de Rudolf Noureev, a series of six documentaries. This program focuses on Raymonda, the first ballet mounted by Nureyev for the Paris Opéra Ballet upon his appointment as director of dance in 1983. Most of the performance footage is drawn from 1983 and the revival on the stage of the Opéra Bastille in 1998. Principal dancers of the Opéra and other commentators discuss the choreography and interpretation of the ballet, particularly the roles of Raymonda, Jean de Brienne and Abderam, as well as the experience of working with Nureyev. Nureyev himself is seen in rehearsals, performances and interviews recorded over the years prior to his death in 1993. The program also contains background information on the first production of the ballet by Marius Petipa in St. Petersburg in 1898. The many dance excerpts often juxtapose rehearsal and performance footage of the same choreographic segment, or performances by different dancers in the same variation.
