Summary
Interviewed in New York City's Central Park on the occasion of his performances in the musical The king and I, Rudolf Nureyev discusses various topics, including his ballet training in Russia ; the difference between performing in The king and I and dancing in ballets ; his plans for dancing after The king and I ; his partnership with Margot Fonteyn ; his appearances in the Netherlands, where he partnered ballerina Alexandra Radius ; his recent visit to his mother in Russia, and his opinion of Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost policy ; his belief that his best years were spent in the West ; his apolitical nature. The interview is illustrated with footage from news stories on his defection and his arrest in a drug raid in San Francisco ; performance excerpts of the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, and the pas de deux from Les sylphides (danced with Fonteyn) ; and backstage scenes.
