Summary
  1. Profile of Canadian choreographer Brian Macdonald. The program, which opens with his investiture with the Order of Canada in November 1967, focuses mainly on his work as artistic director of the Harkness Ballet. Macdonald describes the facilities and artwork of Harkness House, the company's New York headquarters ; notes the special qualities of company members Elisabeth Carroll, Helgi Tomasson, Lone Isaksen, and Lawrence Rhodes ; talks about his responsibilities as an administrator as well as a choreographer ; discusses two of his ballets for the Harkness, Time out of mind and Firebird, the latter created in collaboration with designer Rouben Ter-Arutunian ; and reveals his plans for a ballet set in New England, to music by Stravinsky [probably The lottery, first performed by the Harkness Ballet in 1974]. On a more philosophical level, he talks about the choreographer's "divine discontent" and his artistic intentions. In turn, the company's founder and sponsor, Rebekah Harkness, discusses Macdonald's qualities as a choreographer and director. The program includes performance excerpts from Time out of mind, Firebird, and other ballets from the Harkness repertory ; and views of ballet classes (including teacher David Howard) and other activities at the Harkness Ballet School.
