Summary
Profile of Spanish dancer, choreographer and teacher José de Udaeta (b. Barcelona, 1919), with special emphasis on his past and present activities in Germany. His contributions to the evolution of modern-day flamenco dancing are demonstrated through numerous performance excerpts, in which he often appears with Susana Audéoud, with whom he formed the team of Susana y José. He is also seen dancing the title role in a production of Don Quixote, presented by the ballet of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin in 1993 ; rehearsing student dancers at the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin ; and in his second career as a castanet musician and composer, performing excerpts from his program Von Barock bis Rock in 1997. A former student of his, a German dancer who adopted the stage name Amparo de Triana, dances a tribute to him in her studio in Berlin. Throughout the program de Udaeta himself comments upon various aspects of his life and art.
