Description
1 videocassette (59 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Documentary on George Balanchine's choreographic legacy and the preservation of his ballets as living works of art. The provisions of Balanchine's will, which left his ballets to selected individuals, and the establishment of the George Balanchine Trust are discussed by trustee Barbara Horgan and Balanchine's biographer Bernard Taper. The process of restaging his ballets is not only described but demonstrated in rehearsal footage from six American and European ballet companies. Sharing in the discussion are the restagers, the artistic directors of the companies featured in the program, and others with experience of performing and restaging Balanchine's ballets (Victoria Simon, Kay Mazzo, Suzanne Farrell, Suki Schorer, Violette Verdy, Bart Cook). In addition to discussing the restaging process, participants also talk about the unity of music and choreography in Balanchine's works ; the role of Balanchine training as a basis for his choreography ; Balanchine's acceptance of individual interpretations ; the need to balance authenticity and vitality in restagings.
