Summary
The Robert Baral papers span 1876 to 1980, and consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, reviews, business papers, family and personal papers, artwork such as caricatures and other drawings, and manuscript drafts of Mr. Baral's books. The bulk of the material is related to the life and career of Florenz Ziegfeld, the ZIEGFELD FOLLIES, and to the revue era in American theater. Of special note are some design reproductions by the French-Russian designer, Erté.
Biography

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Robert Baral moved to New York as an adult, and centered his professional activities there for the rest of his life. He wrote primarily about show business, specifically the sketch-based form of musical entertainment known as the revue. Books written by Robert Baral include REVUE: THE GREAT BROADWAY PERIOD and TURN WEST ON 23RD: A TOAST TO NEW YORK'S OLD CHELSEA.
