Summary
The Jewel Plummer Cobb Photograph Collection depicts some aspects of her career as an educator, biologist and college administrator from the mid-1950s to 1985. The collection includes individual and group portraits of Cobb; candid and group portraits of friends and colleagues; views of conferences, receptions and social gatherings; and views of classroom lectures and college science laboratories. The collection lacks views of Cobb's personal life.
The collection depicts Cobb in group portraits with an unidentified lab assistant or researcher, probably during her professorship at New York University (ca. 1955-1960); conducting a laboratory experiment at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York (1969); in a studio portrait as Dean at Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut (1973); in group portraits with fellow members of the National Science Board (1975, 1978); in candid shots at various Connecticut College functions during 1976, which include U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, Connecticut Secretary of State Gloria Schaffer and author Caroline Bird; in a candid portrait, addressing an unidentified event, when she was Dean at Douglass College, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey (ca. 1980); in group portraits and views of functions at California State University, Fullerton during the early 1980s, including her investiture as President at CSU Fullerton (1983); in a snapshot view of her giving a classroom lecture (1985); and in a group of contact print portraits (1985).
The collection includes a group of candid shots and snapshots depicting Cobb, her staff and researchers from her research laboratory at Connecticut College (1975); and a group of candid portraits and views from a reception given to honor Cobb's appointment as CSU Fullerton President in 1981, which was compiled in a photo album by the University's Black Faculty and Staff Association. Cobb is also depicted in group portraits from the Gordon Research Conference at Colby Junior College, New London, New Hampshire (1959); as Dean of Douglass College at the Class of 1930 fiftieth anniversary class reunion (1980); and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation gathering at Spring Hill, [Minnesota?] (1985). Also shown are views of delegates attending the VIII International Cancer Congress held in Moscow, the Soviet Union (1962).
